Position Summary
The Concurrent Disorders Counsellor:
is a member of the Leadership Team and is an active member in management-level decision-making regarding mental health programming at the agency,
provides direct service (outreach) to youth aged 12-19 throughout the West Kootenay Boundary region, and
provides supervision to one or more members of the Staff Team.
The Concurrent Disorders Counsellor is anticipated to allocate their time to the tasks below, however, they have the flexibility to manage their schedule and task list according to the needs of the communities they serve as well as to the needs of the agency and the contract(s). They are invited to communicate to the Executive Director any changes to the following task list according to their actual experience of the position.
Leadership & Supervision
Attend Leadership Team Meetings and fully participate according to the Leadership Team’s Terms of Reference
Hire, orient, train, support, and evaluate the Child and Youth Mental Health Outreach Worker with the support the Executive Team and the Leadership Team
Provide monthly clinical supervision to the Child and Youth Mental Health Outreach Worker
Understand, support, and model the agency’s mission, vision, values, strategic plan, policies, and procedures.
Support members of the Staff Team with critical incident supervision as needed
Support and model a desirable workplace culture
One-on-One, Group, & Family Clinical Counselling Services

Community Engagement (as needed)
attend, participate, and/or host local interagency meetings
join and/or participate in local advisory committees

Recreation (as needed)
coordinate with Freedom Quest’s Recreation Coordinator
assess individual and community recreational needs
facilitate youth engagement in recreational activities
participate in recreational activities
Administration:
manage program budget
collect program data
participate in strategic planning initiatives
participate in fundraising activities
seek out and participate in training opportunities
perform duties in accordance with Freedom Quest’s Policy Manual
prepare statistical, outcome, and narrative reports
attend general staff meetings
engage in and prepare for clinical supervision
inform community partners about Freedom Quest programs and services
maintain current & accurate client files and other records
Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Education
Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Social Work or related area is required. However, a Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience may be considered. For example:
MSW (Clinical Specialization or equivalent training/education),
MA/Med (Counselling Psychology),
Master’s Degree in Child and Youth Care (CYC), or
Graduate of a recognized school of nursing with current practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses of BC (CBNBC) and/or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of BC (CRPRNBC).
Experience o Minimum 5 years clinical experience working in child and youth mental health services o Minimum 3 years experience working in substance use services o Experience providing clinical supervision o Experience working with children and youth aged 6-18 o Experience working with LBGTQ2S+ youth and their families o Experience working from a harm-reduction approach o Experience working alongside worldviews that are not your own o Experience and confidence driving in all seasons
Skills and Abilities o Grounded in harm-reduction, trauma-informed, person-centred, and low-barrier ways of working and being
Ability to build rapport with youth and families
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to prioritize and effectively manage time
Able to contribute positively to a team environment as well as work independently
Strong understanding and committed practice of counselling and professional ethics
Other Requirements
Valid Class V Driver’s License (required; Class IV preferred)
Driver’s Abstract (required)
Valid First Aid and CPR Certification (required)
Reliable Vehicle (required)
Criminal Record Check for working with children and vulnerable adults (required)
Recent Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (an asset)
