Program Summary
The Recreation Mentorship Program is an activity-based therapeutic program that supports young people aged 12-19 and their adult mentors in building healthy relationships with each other, other participants, and the facilitators of the program. The program is focused on supporting youth who have been adversely impacted by, or who are at risk of being adversely impacted by, substance use. With their adult mentors and through the shared experience of outdoor recreation activities, youth will a) be invited into activities that may have previously been inaccessible to them, b) be introduced to programming that facilitates healthy relationships, c) participate in physical activity to promote their overall wellness, and d) learn new skills.
Position Summary
The Recreation Mentorship Program Facilitator is anticipated to allocate their time to the tasks below, however, they have the flexibility, under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, to manage their own schedule and task list according to the needs of program participants as well as to the needs of the agency and the contract.
Program Planning
attend program planning meetings
offer their knowledge and expertise to the Recreation Coordinator
support in the development of program documents
support the development of program activities
co-facilitate youth intake interviews
co-facilitate mentor intake interviews
cultivate community partnerships
Program Facilitation:
co-plan recreational outings
coordinate with mentors
coordinate with community partners
coordinate with youth
plan meals and transportation
facilitate program activities
book recreation equipment
risk management assessment
Administration:
collect program data
prepare statistical, outcome, and narrative reports
attend general staff meetings
work with external evaluator to manage program evaluation
cultivate and nurture community partnerships
seek out and develop program activities
conduct youth intake interviews
conduct mentor intake interviews
Knowledge Skills, and Abilities
Education
A degree in child and youth care, social work or related field. A combination of education and experience that would be equivalent may be accepted.
Experience
Three years of experience working with youth who are adversely affected by substances
Experience working with youth in an outdoor/wilderness setting
Experience working with groups
Experience working in a counselling capacity
Experience working from a harm-reduction, client-centred, strengths-based, attachment and trauma-informed approach
Other Requirements
Valid Driver’s License (Class IV, unrestricted preferred)
